Arrived Barcaldine 'Barcy" mid morning. Checked out the local CBD interesting stuff and the Labour Tree, since been poisioned.
Head out of town to the Lloyd Jones Weir, no other campers, but lot's of visitor's over the next week checking out the Weir flood level's.
Flood water just starting to come over the Weir.
It's now a raging torrent heading to Lake Eyre and it's getting noisy.
The Julie River which runs thru Barcy and Thomson River which runs thru Longreach, are they only RIVERS that run into a CREEK, the COOPER CREEK that end's up in Lake Ayre.
Local station owner Peter befriended us at the Weir and invited us over for Afty Tea, thus Sue got to feed their pet Joey.
If you look closely you can see the top of the vehicle, mid photo.
On our return from Dunraven the flood waters had backed up over the flood way, about 200mm at 1630hrs. However at 1930hrs (a long afty tea) I could just make out the road markers, and the flood marker 800mm on our side of the water. Off slowly, about half way across the rooad markers disappeared, then the headlights wet under water, Sue took a deep breath and I kept the power on and bow wave. Not a word until the lights started coming out of the water. The full moon help as we could just make out the road ahead.
Talk about four wheel driver training theory being put into practice. It worked!
Reckon the water was 1.2mtrs - whew! not a good idea in the dark. Took a few day's to dry out the carpets, but we had time!
After that effort we hooked up the BT in the dark before putting our heads down, just incase the water kept coming and we had to relocate during the night.
The folks from Dunraven coming to visit for a coffee.
Just as well we were not here in 03!
Things starting to dry out, overcast the last few days run the Generator for a couple of hours a day just to top up the batteries.
False start - headed off and visited Ilfracome, Longreach and camped 23ks west of Longreach, but it rained all night. Headed back into Longreach to visit the QANTUS museum, but talking to a truckie, better to keep moving as this rain will bring more water across the Hwy between Longreach & Mt Isa.
Heading back to the Weir - flood way crossing at 0.4mtrs and ripping. About 20 minutes after we passed thru we heard on the UHF that the road had been closed.
So we had to resign oursleves to more feeds of _______
Redclaw - great tucker, and the dog biscuits work well.
Turtle's also enjoy the biscuits!
Finally dried out enough to get the signage on.
Time to roll on, topped up with water - ready for next destination Longreach & the QANTUS Museum.
